Paths to Inner Peace
Overcoming Inertia
Below you will find some tips on how to overcome inertia in regard to meditation. Inertia can stop our meditation practise in its tracks when we are just getting going and instead of meditating we find ourselves doing all sorts of other different tasks. Follow the tips below to keep your meditation practise on track!
- Habit - Make your meditation a habit. Try to meditate at the same time each day and preferably in the same place. Your subconscious will then learn that it is time to meditate and you may often even find yourself getting into a light meditative state even before you begin. If you have a room that you can dedicate to meditation then that would be excellent. Otherwise, use the same chair each time. Light a candle, burn some incense. These little rituals will alert your subconscious that is time to meditate and it will cooperate more readily.
- Just do it! - Your subconscious will come up with all sorts of excuses as to why you should not meditate. Ignore the little voice in your mind which is urging you to do something else and just get on with your meditation. The subconscious does not like to change; the ego fears change. Send love to your ego and tell it that it is safe, you are merely looking within and learning more about yourself.
- Try a Guided Journey - A more active style meditation will keep your mind more focused. If your meditation involves a journey or a visualization then your mind can be more readily focused rather than trying a meditation where you have to empty your mind.
- Affirmations - use affirmations to improve your meditation practise. ‘I love to meditate!’, ‘I meditate regularly and enjoy the benefits from this regular practise’, ‘I open myself to new realisations and I embrace change’ are all noteworthy affirmations that you could use. Make up your own remembering to always include statements in the present tense and which do not include any negative statements.
- Support - Tell your friends what you are doing. Get them to support you. You could even start a meditation circle and work together. You will then have people to talk to about your experiences and their experiences will encourage you. Find like minded people.
- Regularity - After a while, your subconscious will become used to your meditation practise and will even begin to support you as your practise deepens. You will uncover more realisations about yourself and the world around you and this will spur you on even more.
